Ah Hock The Coolie

There is a Chinese coolie named ah hock. He came from china to work in Singapore for a living.

Ah hock works for a company as a coolie in the morning. His job is to carry bricks and heavy thing around the construction site. When he is working he wears the panel belt to show that he is on shift. At night, he works at a soil bucket company .the soil buckets are always filled with poop that are in the bucket for about two days. The smell is unbearable.

When is he free, he will go to the opium shop and smoke opium because it is like a form of relaxation and is a way to escape for any working-class men living in the cramped house. Ah hock usually cannot afford to pay his rent because of his opium addition. He not only own his landlord a sum of money and also the loan sharks. The opium set consist of a pipe, lamp, opium box, spindle, scrapper and container. The pipe made of bamboo and the distillation bowl (damper), usually made of terracotta or porcelain. The lamp produces a steady low –degree flame that cooks the opium pellet without charring it. The opium is used to keep the pellets .the spindle inserts the pellet into the bowl, and scrapes after-smoke residue from the pipe. The scraper scrapes dross the from the opium bowl .the container contains the dross.

Ah hock live in kampong .kampong is a place where everyone can bond together as they live near each other. They use the water from the river to wash vegetable, clean themselves and rear poultry as they do not have pipe water to their house to wash their things. The water in the river is thus being polluted as there is dirt in the water.
